PRESIDENTIAL KIN

Article from 1942 - Chicago Tribune

Churchill Kin of Roosevelt, Expert Finds

New York, June 23 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Great Britain are eighth cousins once removed, but you have to go way back to the Mayflower to prove it.

Announcement of the discovery of blood relationship between two of the world's leaders was made today at the office of the New York Genealogical and Biographical society by Conklin Mann, editor of the "bible" of genealogy, the "New York Genealogical and Biographical Record."

The relationship comes thru the line of Mr. Churchill's mother, Lady Randolph Churchill, who was Jennie Jerome of Brooklyn, Mann said. Actually, however, you have to go back to 1620 when a 10 year old boy, John Cooke, came to Plymouth on the Mayflower.

Discovery is Accidental

The relationship between the wartime leaders was discovered accidentally by Mann, who has spent the last four months compiling the complete American pedigree of Mr. Churchill. He now has completed a list of more than 250 of Mr. Churchill's American ancestors, thru his mother, he said.

"Mr. Roosevelt and Mr. Churchill have three Mayflower ancestors in common," he explained. "Two of these are Francis Cooke and Richard Warren. The third is John Cooke, son of Francis Cooke, who came to Plymouth on the Mayflower in 1620 with his father. He was the boy of 10.

"Mr. Roosevelt is descended from two of the daughters of John Cooke and Sarah Warren. One was Esther Cooke, who married Thomas Taber, the other was Sarah Cooke, who married Arthur Hathaway. Mr. Churchill is descended from a third daughter, Elizabeth Cooke, who married Daniel Willcox of Portsmouth, R.I., and Dartmouth, Mass., then in Plymouth colony."

Descendants Intermarry

Mann said that for more than 150 years some of the descendants of John Cooke and other ancestors of Mr. Roosevelt and Mr. Churchill lived as neighbors in Dartmouth, Bristol county, Massachusetts.

"During that time," he said, "they witnessed each other's deeds and wills and many of their children inter-married. Not until the revolution when the migration into New York state began did they become separated."

Another among Mr. Churchill's ancestors, Mann said, was Arthur Howland, the Quaker brother of John Howland, who came to Plymouth on the Mayflower. Mr. Roosevelt is descended from John Howland, Mann said.
