To the Illinois Library Page have been added more World War I Casualty Lists. All of the data from the casualty lists is searchable from the main library page.

I'm starting a new feature to my blog updates. Many people have brickwalls in their research because of hidden facts related to their ancestry. Each post will contain some obscure facts that perhaps will help someone's family tree quest. These clues will be from various resource and will be for various surnames. If any of these brickwall busters helps your research, let me know! Hope this helps!

BRICKWALL BUSTER #1

Dated October 16, 1916
"Mariam Ankan Gurinian
A war orphan found a home in Chicago Saturday when Vaban G. Gurinian of 4117 Greenview avenue, a native of Armenia, who is president and treasurer of the Oriental Candy company at 1852 West Austin avenue, filed papers for the adoption of a 4 year old Armenian girl.
The child is to take the place of Anna, daughter of the candy merchant, who was killed by an automobile several years ago.
The nameless child and her brother were brought to the Rev. Mr. Robert Stapleton, a Congregational missionary, by Turkish soldiers after the children's mother and father were massacred by the Turks. The surname of the parents is not known to the minister, but he did learn the first names of each. The father's was Armanag and the mother's was Mariam. The mother will not be forgotten in the naming of the child as permission is asked to name her Mariam Ankan Gurinian."
